New Clinician Handbook

As Australasia’s largest dental group, Abano Healthcare needed more than a brand guideline. They required a comprehensive handbook to onboard and align over 750 clinicians across 250+ clinics in Australia and New Zealand.

The challenge was clear: clinicians entering the network were facing fragmented onboarding, inconsistent messaging, and uncertainty around compliance, operations, and brand values. The business needed a single, trusted resource that could streamline the first months of employment, reinforce culture, and ensure every clinician delivered care as part of one unified brand.

The Opportunity

New clinicians joining Abano were navigating a maze of disconnected policies, compliance requirements, and brand information. Without a central reference point, onboarding was inconsistent and placed pressure on both HR and Marketing teams.

The organisation needed a tool that could:

  • Reduce onboarding friction for new hires

  • Communicate brand values and strategic priorities clearly

  • Provide compliance essentials (registration, insurance, payroll, licensing)

  • Reinforce Abano’s culture and patient-first promise

  • Align clinicians with Abano’s broader marketing and growth objectives

Our Approach

We designed a 56-page New Clinician Handbook that combined clarity, brand alignment, and usability. The handbook included:

  • CEO and Clinical Team welcome to embed culture from day one

  • Vision, values, and strategic priorities framed in plain language

  • Step-by-step onboarding guidance (registration, payroll, contracts, insurance)

  • Operational frameworks for practice management, patient records, scheduling, and compliance

  • Marketing and brand role in driving patient growth and brand recognition

  • Clinician development programs (Kickstart, Momentum, Accelerate) to map career progression

Every section was designed with hierarchy, white space, and structure in mind, transforming a dense compliance manual into a resource clinicians would actually use.

The Result and Impact

Consistency at Scale: Over 750 clinicians across 250+ clinics received the same onboarding and brand experience.

  1. Reduced Friction: HR, Marketing, and Operations teams had fewer ad hoc requests and a centralised resource to point to.

  2. Brand Alignment: Clinicians understood not only the policies and procedures, but also the vision, values, and patient-first ethos behind Abano.

  3. Strategic ROI: Faster onboarding, stronger retention, and a brand experience that felt unified across three major sub-brands (Lumino, Maven, 1300SMILES).

This project was completed during my role as Lead Designer at Abano Healthcare, where I was responsible for translating complex corporate, clinical, and compliance content into a brand-led, accessible handbook that could scale across the group’s network.
